Southern Tier is a brewery I have a love/hate relationship with. On the one hand, their beers can be found everywhere in my region and they offer some nice brews (Chokolat is a great example of a chocolate stout; 2XSmash IPA is also pretty good). However, in a lot of instances, I find myself walking away from a Southern Tier brew expecting more than what I got.

That’s sort of how I feel about Creme Brûlée.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a bad beer. It’s good. But it could be better. Mostly, my complaint lies in the body and taste.

Color: deep brown with tan head

Nose: vanilla and caramel, maybe a little banana

Mouthfeel: creamy but not syrupy or thick

Taste: stout taste not overpowered by vanilla, accentuated. Back end doesn’t have much to show for it. Hits hard and gone…like you’d expect from a desert.

Alcohol flavor: boozy but smooth

Overall, I give this one 3 out of 5 Knox.
